Medicinal chemistry is concerned with:-
1-discovery and development 2- synthesis
3- isolation 4- semisynthetic
5- identification (spectroscopy IR – NMR –UV) (chromatography TLC) (melting point) (content analysis C,H,N)
6-SAR (structural activity relationship) very important
8-interpretation of mechanism of action
Are agents or chemical substancese that effect living processes and therefore used for (treatment – diagnosis- protection )
Drug nomenclature :-
1- cmmon or generic / non proprietory
2- trade name / proprietory
3- iupac (chemical) / non prpprietory , describes functional groups.
Drug classification : -
1- chemical structure a- organic b- inorganic
2- pharmacological activities (liver drugs –CNS drugs – kidney drugs –etc)
3- therapeutic uses (antihypertensive –antianginal-etc)
4- mechanism of action .
5- according to the actions
A- specific : agents with similar chemical structure and pharmacological activities sharing the same pharmacophores e.g anti inflammatory
Pharmacophore are / functional groups responsible for pharmacological activity .
B- non specific ; agents with different chemical structures put similar pharmacological activities and sharing the same physicochemical properties e.g general anesthetic .
Note general properties of general anesthetic :-

1- Old (SAR)
2-modern / computer drug design
1- disease mechanism
2- drug transfer in the body (absorption –distribution – metabolism – excretion )
D + R ↔D-R complex →response (for ideal drug )
But enzyme inhibitors and covalent bond association (organo phosphorus compounds ) Are exeptions ( not reversible)
